Routine biochemical screening on admission saves neither money nor time: a randomised trial

چکیده
Background Evidence justifying the use of routine laboratory screening on admission is weak. The principle, however, has been widely used for decades, the arguments being convenience, a more rapid and thorough screening, and thus reduced admission time. This study investigated the differences in cost of tests and admission time if doctors at admission prescribed single biochemical tests rather than using predefined test panels.

We report a prospective, randomised, controlled trial of the effect of either a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (diclofenac sodium) or physiotherapy on the recovery of knee function after arthroscopy. At 42 days after surgery there was no significant benefit from either form of postoperative treatment compared with the control group. Complications attributable to the anti-inflammatory drug...

[ 250 ] We read with interest the recent editorial (1) in the IJME on the ethics of standard care in screening trials for cervical cancer in India. The author takes exception to the fact that three cervical cancer screening studies in India used no screening as the control arm, in spite of evidence that the Pap smear is an effective screening tool. The author argues that the Pap smear should ha...

BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency is common in older people and may increase risk of falls and fracture. Hospital inpatients are at particular risk of falling. Previous studies suggest that vitamin D improves neuromuscular function and reduces falls. OBJECTIVE To determine whether routine supplementation with vitamin D plus calcium reduces numbers of fallers and falls in a cohort of hospital ad...
